Review of Pontypool (2009) by Jim L — 10 Jul 2013
A really odd spin on the well-worn zombie/virus movie that maintains great tension in its basement radio station setting, and has great, involving performances, notably McHattie as the shock-jock Mazzy.
In an audacious move that will probably alienate those expecting a straight up genre piece, the movie twists into something akin to a riff on linguistics, as it transpires the virus that turns people into bloodthirsty zombies is passed on through verbal language.
It does feel like one big experiment, as if a linguistics professor was challenged to crowbar a thesis into a zombie film, but the cast and the effective single isolated location setting make it strangely effective.
