Review of Poltergeist (2015) by Doug M — 02 Nov 2015
Speilberg contributed to the writing of this newer version of Poltergeist from 1982, and although I am not an avid watcher of horror films I think it was pretty obvious that this one was very bad. This newer version tried to modernize the classic film and ruined it all with bad CGI and a slow climax that doesn't end with much excitement.
As a family moves into a new house they quickly find many faulty things going on. The son Griffin, played by Kyle Catlett, is playing in the yard and uncovers a bone of some kind. Also Maddy the youngest daughter, played by Kennedi Clements, shoves a twig into the ground and it magically pushes itself back out. Later the family finds out the neighborhood's untold secrets, and understand why this stuff happens. After Maddy gets abducted by demons the family brings in ghost hunter and reality tv show host Carrigan Brooke, played by Jared Harris to get Maddy back. But right as you think everything's going good something bad happens.
Like I said the movie keeps you on your toes and does a good job of making you think everything is solved then something totally messes everything up. Another thing that was done well was the wide shot with a zoom in on something creating attention. And just like any other horror movie suspenseful music is a must and I would say this met those standards. Besides that The CGI with the demons was really bad. There were also some really cheap explosions and flares of light.
Finally I feel Speilberg should have stayed away from this movie because as a whole it was not up to his standards. I do not see him as a horror guy but since he just wrote the film and didn't direct it I guess it could be okay. Overall though my personal opinion on the film is not very good and I would not recommend it to someone looking to stay in and watch a scary movie that will keep them engaged throughout the film.
