Review of Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! (2017) by Mackro — 09 Dec 2017
I was incredibly disappointed by this movie and I wasn't expecting much to begin with. Unless you're 5 years old I can't imagine you would enjoy this movie. Being someone who has grown up with Pokemon, I did not find much to like here if anything.
For a good portion of the movie I was struggling to figure out what the point was as we jumped from scene to scene seemingly at random. It doesn't seem like they knew what they wanted this movie to be, and it shows, as they try to cram in a reboot of Ash's journey, new Pokemon that didn't exist back in the day, some ineffective drama, and a surprisingly little amount of nostalgia.
In some instances the change of scenes are down right jarring. The movie is simply trying to do too much and it truly suffers for it. I will give credit to the animators as they've done a beautiful job, but, I did not like the muted colour palette they used for Ash's clothing.
Originally his hat was a very bright red, but, now it is practically maroon. I also can't stand the new symbol on Ash's hat. Why did they even need to change it? This may sound trivial, but, this is the main character we're talking about so I had to look at this ugly redesign in almost every frame of the movie.
To sum up, this is a children's movie and there's nothing wrong with that, but, when your fans have had 20 years to grow up and since this movie is a celebration of the anime's beginning, maybe it should be enjoyable to those of us who actually watched those episodes.
Kids these days will not be able to appreciate this the same way a long time fan such as myself would and now we cannot even do this.
