Review of Point Blank (1967) by Paul I — 16 Jan 2008
There's nothing wrong with making an "artsy" thriller - if you're Jean-Pierre Melville and know how to pull it off. Only Melville didn't direct "Point Blank"; John Boorman did. And for all his strengths, the man cannot do abstract movie-making - instead of being "cool", "Point Blank" just ends up feeling too clever for its own good.
"Payback" is better - not only is it less pretentious, it has more energy. "Point Blank" is lifeless.
