Review of Poetry (2010) by William D — 04 Mar 2011
This riveting, delicate and exquisite Korean drama from Lee Chang-dong (Secret Sunshine) begins with the image of a body floating downriver, that of a raped schoolgirl who has killed herself. At the same time, a pensioner (Korean star Yun Jung-hee, a beloved Korean actress) is raising her teen grandson, who is implicated in the girl's death.
The older woman, facing an Alzheimer's diagnosis, enrolls herself in a poetry class, eager and desperate to find the words to describe all the beautiful things she has know before her mind fails her.
The movie does her one better, making her very life a beautiful poem on what it means to live fully and really see the world.
