Review of Please Give (2010) by Ryan H — 29 Aug 2010
Please give was mostly about its characters internal conflicts. What made that problematic is that none of those internal conflicts were all that interesting. Catherin Keener has a lot of money so she feels bad for less fortunate people but she is to shallow to realize that he excessive compassion actually comes off as insensitive and blah and blah and blah.
Oh and Oliver Plat has an affair with a younger woman, and no one cares. Amanda Peet looks 5 years younger than when I had a crush on her, almost a decade go, and that is not a compliment. It is convenient that someone as plasticized as her was cast as such a shallow character though.
However, Rebecca Hall really steals the show. I was mesmerized every second she was on screen. It is too bad that all of the other characters were so devoid of interesting qualities that many moments without her on screen just kind of happened to pass time.
There were a few funny asides, but none of them were connected enough keep the story feeling well written.
