Review of Please Give (2010) by Ray P — 01 Dec 2010
An outstanding ensemble cast in what is probably my favorite Indie Film so far of 2009.
Nicole Holfcener's best film date is a great look at some lonely and deeply flawed New Yorker's who are all overcompensating for their short-comings with involvement in other activities to make them feel better. Most specifically, Catherine Keener and Oliver Platt are in a fairly loveless marraige and are raising a disengaged teen-ager. Keener and Platt run a furniture store whereby they underpay for the furniture of deceased New York residents and mark them up in their store for a huge profit. To compensate, Keener spends the entire film trying to find ways to give back via charity and handing over money to the homeless.
In the apartment next door is an elderly Grandmother (the absolutely terrific Ann Guilbert in one of the funniest roles of the year). She is brutally honest with everyone, especially her grand-daughters played by Rebecca Hall and Amanda Peet. The two grand-daughters have their own issues and Peet has a brief fling with Platt.
The film is as brutally honest as Ann Guilbert's dialouge and the characters feel so real I forgot I was watching a movie. A must see for Indie film fans!
