Review of Pleasantville (1998) by Marc R — 18 May 2012
This is one of the best films of 1998. Gary Ross takes what could've been an easy cash-in on the nostalgia for 1950s sitcoms and instead makes a smart, wonderfully acted and photographed film that, while serving as a fully-realized ode to those shows, also imbues the film w/ deep and thoughtful themes that reflect a decade not nearly as picture-perfect as its television shows would have you believe, and a society that has changed considerably.
This is a film memorable for its great production values as well as for the ideas on screen.
