Review of Pleasantville (1998) by Eric H — 25 May 2013
I don't care what most people say about this film, I Love it, Gary Ross has crafted a brilliant masterpiece. Pleasantville tells the story of twin brother and sister David and Jenny (Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon) who after breaking their television remote are visited by a t.
V. repairman (Don Knotts) who is impressed with David's knowledge of the Television show Pleasantville, and gives them a special remote. When David and Jenny fight over that one they are put into the tv show Pleasantviile.
The world they go into is Black and White and the characters are all sheltered in their little world until, after a series of events the world and it's characters are turning into color. The film is truly beautiful in scale and in music, Gary Ross is a master of entertainment and Pleasantville really show that the revolution of a person begins withing.
Tobey Maguire and Joan Allen give outstanding performances their performances show such beautiful vulnerability, Jeff Daniels and William H. Macy are really outstanding in this film. The court room scene is truly a thing of beauty in a film that is a misunderestimated classic.
I really loved the Art Direction and the Costumes for this film, and this film marked a final performance for J.T. Walsh, in a brilliant performance as Big Bob. I give the film ***1/2 stars.
