Review of Pleasantville (1998) by Danny L — 07 Mar 2009
Ok, this film DID have something to say. There is no "perfect" way in the real world. The film uses the disturbing perfection motif from a made up 50s show to bring this idea to light, which I really enjoyed. While this film does embody the idea by showing how real teenagers from the 1990s expose the flaws in a shallow idealistic 50s TV world, it takes the film in the wrong direction at various points in the film - especially the 3rd act. Too bad it lost it's sense of purpose because it was an interesting idea. Another thing that killed it for me was it's over indulgence in itself - dramatic music - long pauses - basically acting that promoted itself as important when nothing was being realized or learned by the audience -thus the over self indulgence.
Worth watching for like 40 minutes but not after that where it takes the film in a direction that is boring, mundane, and just as shallow and perfect as the very 50s tv show it's depicting.
