Review of Play It Again, Sam (1972) by Mark S — 11 Aug 2012
Allen appears here to play a very much exaggerated version of himself or the public perception of his character or 'type'. He's a little too pathetic to be believable or as likeable as some of Allen's other intelligent underdog characters - more Rick Moranis than Woody Allen.
But the idea of someone loving a film like Casablanca and having it spill over into their real life is a good one and the guy who's playing Bogart is spot on. I'm not sure why Allen chose not to direct this effort but Herbert Ross did a competent job.
