Review of Play It Again, Sam (1972) by Alex G — 11 Mar 2014
While not directed by Allen, this feature is pretty much as Woody Allen as it gets. He stars in it, he wrote the screenplay based on the play he also wrote and starred in alongside Tony Roberts and Diane Keaton, and it has all the charm and wit of an Allen feature, with a style that is more in line with some of his later features (as opposed to the films he was making at the time this came out).
Allen stars as a man feeling unlucky in love after his wife leaves him, and begins to take advice from an imaginary Humphrey Bogart. It's funny and heartwarming, with a good cast.
