Review of Platoon (1986) by Dustin D — 04 Feb 2011
A shockingly realistic account of the experiences of US combat troops fighting the unyielding and pointless war in Vietnam. While the scenes of intense violence and bloodshed are hard to take, it's the underlying sense of fear, hopelessness and evil that truly give Platoon a disturbing reality.
Charlie Sheen plays a new recruit who's very soul is torn between right and wrong under the conflicting leadership of his superiors. It is an essay on the fragile human mind and how easily lost and corrupted we can become under extreme circumstances.
The film is a brilliant record of the futility of that war and the unnecessary toll taken on its men thrown needlessly into harms way.
