Review of Platoon (1986) by Stephen E — 02 Aug 2012
"Platoon" isn't quite as important as it wants to be nor does it accomplish any of its themes effectively, but it still offers an involving two hours of solid entertainment. Oliver Stone's direction is effective in presenting the horrors of combat in Vietnam, even if his execution is slightly dated, and the battle scenes are impressively choreographed.
As well, there are some noteworthy performances from Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, and Willem Dafoe (who is frankly underused). In the long run, "Platoon" isn't as powerful as it should be, but I was never bored.
