Review of Planet Terror (2007) by Bart R — 09 Jan 2011
I think Planet Terror is the better half of the Grindhouse series, It's very old-school, very action packed, and very strong on both visuals and acting. I also think this one was better at making it look like you're watching it in an old grindhouse cinema, with lots of lines and specs on the screen and sometimes missing frames and stuff like that.
Planet Terror starts with some scenes that show you who the characters are and what they are like, they all live in a small town were a military base happens to be located. Something goes wrong there and a virus gets spread. The hospital overloads with people growing large infections way too rapidly. When these infected people are starting to attack normal people the staff of the hospital and all other normal people that live in the town run off to a place called BAR B Q where they have the best ribs in Texas. Some of the characters are a sexy girl whose leg got decapitated, a psycho female doctor, El Wray a Mexican guy who shoots faster than his shadow and the ex of the doctor who is very down to earth and quite creepy at points. The have to find an antidote for the zombie infection and keep the zombies of so they all become deputies of the police.
That's pretty much it for as far as the story goes, this movie is not that much about the plot but more about the whole atmosphere of seeming to be in an old theater watching an old grindhouse movie. The music helps a lot and the movie's also very gory and action packed. This really is an action movie the way I like it: stylish, not depending on CGI to much, with a well worked out theme and with insane and impossible stunts.
