Review of Planet Terror (2007) by Jay R — 08 Oct 2012
There's no specific set of criteria for what determines my 'So Bad it's Good' movies, but this was borderline. The problem? Some moments are built with quality writing and filmmaking! and it feels a little out of place next to the pure trash we expect. But it was never so much that it detracted from the overall experience of an enjoyable Grindhouse movie. Tarantino's part as the Rapist played unnecessarily long and also detracted from the simple entertainment sought; it also just wasn't funny. But still, 3 stars - it was definitely fun enough, and a great ending for any action movie. There's one sex scene in here that's just priceless, and seeing as I don't usually care for sex scenes in movies, this is my favorite of any.
If anything makes up for the lack of balance between being pretty good and really bad, it's that famous Rose McGowan leg-gun we all know from the posters, and it doesn't fail to entertain -- that baby has no nerve-connectors, no trigger is pulled, an unlimited magazine, and it works whenever she damn well feels like it! Now that is a Grindhouse fetish fulfilled right there :-).
