Review of Planet 51 (2009) by Cory C — 19 Aug 2010
This movie suffers from what most animated films do; they replace actual comedy with pop cultural references and trends. All these movies are put together with little thought, time, and effort. They pretty much exist because for every kid having a ticket you're getting a parent suckered into it as well.
They even didn't put much effort into the voice actors. Now I'm saying nothing bad about any of them at all. I enjoy all the major ones as actors. Just that they all really don't have a distiguished voice.
If you replaced Jessica Biel with some girl who does some Saturday morning cartoon would you have noticed? I found myself consistently getting bored. You could walk away make a sandwhich or do a load of dishes come back and not miss a thing.
The only thing I enjoyed that makes me give it 2 stars instead of one is the alien world has a 50's Americana look to it. Life was great pre Vietnam white fences 2 cars in every garage. It was also when a lot of the old cheesy sci-fi alien movies were huge mostly driven with all the alien conspiracies and Area 51 cover up.
Much better animated works out there. Stick with Pixar. They know how to make a movie for everyone.
