Review of Plan 9 from Outer Space (1957) by Lucas Y — 09 Mar 2009
Everyone has heard the phrase, "It's so bad, it's good." Plan 9 is the poster for that phrase. Ed Wood managed to screw up pretty much everything with this movie and when he tried to hide his mistakes, it's laughable.
Bela Lugosi (the first REAL Hollywood actor) died a few days into shooting this film, so what does Wood do in retaliation to the passing of his good friend? He replaces his character with a guy 7 feet taller and 50 years younger and tries to hide his face for all the characters remaining scenes.
It's absolutely hilarious and today it wouldn't even be allowed, let alone taken seriously. Luckily for Wood, he had a lot of very close friends who respected him and made this movie watchable.
Hell, I've watched it several times. For 1959, this movie isn't bad at all. They make plenty of shit nowadays that could easily contend for the title of worst movie ever. It's certainly not Plan 9.
