Review of Plan 9 from Outer Space (1957) by Adrian Z — 08 Sep 2013
The worst movie ever made? Perhaps so, but in a good way. Plan 9 is the film that better illustrates director Ed Wood's delusion that he was actually a film director. One immediately sees cardboard sets, flying saucers on strings, continuity disasters such as switching from day to night and back to day again in successive shots, and some of the most bizzare dialogue ever committed to screen.
Bela Lugosi sadly passed away before film actually went into production, but Wood grafted 4 shots of his, derived from home movies, into the film, and tried to create the illusion that Lugosi was still one of the stars of the film by having another younger, taller (non) actor cover his face and pretend to be Lugosi during the remainder of the film.
Such unbelievable ineptitude makes for great comedy, and that's what Plan 9, albeit unintentionally. In all this badness, thigh, one thing that is actually works very well though is Tor Johnson's look as a reanimated corpse.
