Review of PK (2014) by Edmund C — 26 Dec 2014
It is ambitious, that's for sure. Ambitious like Rang De Basanti was. But to me, both did not hit the elusive bullseye, where hard work, conception and artistry do come together and result in film magic! Anyways, PK is the name given to an alien from outerspace who is stranded in India until he finds his 'remote'.
His quest for it uncovers the complexity of mankind, ie "They say something but mean something else" and "They have many religions and each with it's own set of rules". The film's message is one of tolerance, yet it sounded a bit preachy at times.
It did cover some local jokes about 'religious' behaviour, like 'bribing God when we want something' and 'God is not so weak that he needs man to defend Him'. ..and I fully agree when PK questioned, "When a baby is born, where on a baby's body does it state what religion he is?!".
And boy did PK seek God relentlessly (to deliver his remote!). But my takeaway is this simple one - the Divine is around and in us :).
