Review of Pitch Perfect 2 (2015) by Lauryn W — 15 Aug 2015
Over all 6.5 I would watch it on demand.
Pitch perfect 2 is the sequel to Puch Perfect(duhhh). It takes place on the Bella's Senior year. After winning the national championship for the last 3 years they have the opportunity to sing for the president. After embarrassing themselves the Bella's are told they can no longer compete. After finding a loop hold in the penalty they realize the only way to be able to continue to compete is by winning the world championship. Standing in there way is the German team Das Sound Machine. As the Bella's try to refind there sound they all must personally decide what comes after the Bella's.
The music was just as good if not better this time around. This is highlighted in the "riff off" keeping the great dynamics from the first movie but having unique category's and new teams kept it different and exciting. Das Sound Machine were good villains, the two leaders of the team were underdeveloped but worked well with the story. Almost everyone I talked to preferred their finale song to the Bella's. This was partially due to the disappointment of the Bella's finale. The repeat of the song "Flashlight" got annoying and repetitive. The first half of the song was good but then they tried to go sentimental since it didn't have the proper set up it just felt out of place. The humour was very hit or miss. It walked the very thin line of being funny vs being offensive. That meant when it missed it really missed and you could feel it in the audience. The movie had some cool storylines. Becca's job and Fat Amy's love love story were two of the high points. An issue with the movie was it was trying to do too much. The fist act of the movie was generally boring and nothing unique from the first movie. Once we got to the riff off the story started to pick up but never really gained momentum due to the number of storylines you never really got into any. One of the main problems was their were to many storylines so none were fully developed. The big finale was disappointing. The performances were underwhelming the stakes didn't feel there and the excitement was never really there. Platonics cameo as Team Canada was cool and was a nice little nod. Another issue was the movie tried to hard to recapture the "magic" of the first movie. The beauty of the first movie is that it was an independent story that wasn't trying to set up for a franchise and that is something we lost in this movie. Some movies just don't need a franchise. Over all I give this movie a 6.5/10 and I would wait to see this movie on demand.
