Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) by Isaac R — 09 May 2013
It's fun and entertaining. Clearly, the best part about it is Jack Sparrow. Of the pirate movies, this is the the best, though you can make a decent case for the second one. Geoffrey Rush is pretty great simply in these little expressions he has that last only half a second sometimes.
The plot is a Swiss cheese of plot holes. As Gibbs says,"Reason's got nothin' to do with it". Just enjoy the ride and don't think too hard. Jack is definitely his best in this movie.
Any actual plot takes FOREVER to get going. So little time is spent on plot. Instead we're just kinda dinking around, talking, introducing characters, other exposition, and getting to know pirate lore/legends vs.
truth and all that. The latter isn't so bad but the former makes for a long, slow ride. Fresh at the time, but now its been beaten to a pulp so bad, that it's lost its luster. Orlando Bloom may be cute, but man, he can't deliver a convincing line to save his life.
