Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) by Magnus G — 15 Dec 2014
The Curse of the Black Pearl is the only film in the Pirates of the Caribbean series worth bothering with (Dead Man's Chest is decent but you'd end up having to watch the third film to finish it all off).
It's a film that provides great entertainment with likeable if stock characters and grimy visuals that whilst dated by today's standards, do impress. Johnny Depp does a great job as Jack Sparrow and is what makes the film.
He has fun and nails the character well. Geoffrey Rush is a lot of fun to watch as the villain whilst Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley fit in their roles as the good looking romantic couple efficiently.
The film is well over two hours but doesn't feel too long which is a plus (something the sequels failed at). The film spends a bit too much time with Bloom and Knightley which does take some enjoyment out of it when Depp should really be the focus of the film.
However, the film is so exciting to watch that this doesn't become a major issue. If only the sequels could've been as good as this.
