Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) by Jared B — 24 Jun 2018
Pirates of The Caribbean is a well beloved franchise, it makes sense since because POTC is a well written film that was somewhat of an unexpected hit. I will say that the franchise is actually garbage, except for the mediocre Dead Man's Chest.
This film is the counterpart to Raiders of the Lost Ark, every character is memorable, the theme by Hans Zimmerman is iconic, the accuracy of the time period, and the swashbuckling scenes. The main lead Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), is a performance never seen in a pirates film.
It is too bad that he was ruined in later sequels. The main protagonist William Turner (Orlando Bloom), is the relatable, naive, bold hero, who has a full character arc in the film that is very intriguing.
Bloom displays the character's youthfulness, and his courage to an extraordinary level. Elizabeth Swan (Kiera Knightley) is a strong woman who is a perfect balance of feminism, without being too extreme.
Her and Will Turner have great chemistry. The whole cast in general is top notch, and the special effects are amazing for 2003. POTC Curse of The Black Pearl is the only film you need to see in the franchise, so skip all the rest!
