Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) by Jacob G — 06 Jul 2013
Departing from the rest of the series, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is a dark and joyless adventure. The infamous pirate Captain Jack Sparrow is abducted by the daughter of Blackbeard and forced to help her and Blackbeard find the Fountain of Youth, but Barbossa is hot on their trail and looking for revenge.
Starring Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, and Geoffrey Rush, the cast is fairly strong; but the absence of Knightley, Bloom, and others from the first trilogy loom large. The special effects are rather good, as are the action sequences, but they do little to serve the story.
Additionally, the horror themes overshadow the humor; which is toned down quite a bit. On Stranger Tides is a disappointing follow-up to the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, and fails to recapture the same spirit of adventure.
