Depp's character is ill-suited to take on the lead role without his reliable supporting cast, and the same formula is now tiring. Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane are unable to fill the boots of Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom; and overall the film is just entirely uninteresting throughout.
