Review of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) by Jahir H — 10 Feb 2013
This Film managed sometimes to be exciting and it really made me want to see what the Singapore of the Early Modern World was like, but beyond that, this was a weak showing. The plot is overly convoluted, and though some performances, like Depp's and Rush's, are still strong, the good performances do not seem to fit together, and the backstories for them, at this point, are too ridiculous for their performances to make up for them.
The Davie Jones Locker (the producers obviously don't understand what a metaphor is, as they literalized it spectacularly badly) scenes are avant garde in an annoying and unsatisfying way with which I cannot connect, and which remind me why I don't like 2001 a Space Odyssey.
The X-Men/Rocky effect from the first film pretty much doubles, which further retroactively cheapens the first film. Ultimately it was pretty ridiculous. The only reason it gets two stars is because it is entertaining enough to watch if you are flipping through channels and nothing else seems to be on.
