Review of Pinocchio (1940) by Jack W — 25 Feb 2010
What a film. I had never seen it and I was just blown away. It was creative, technically proficient, a strong morality tale and very cognizant as a social commentary both for then and through to today.
There were some ideas that were just inventive and fun, completely creative. Things like when Jiminy gets trapped in the air bubble in the ocean, yet pokes a hole to escape. Brilliant. The art direction and animation were top notch yet pale in comparison to the sound design.
Amazing work. The film resonates as a morality tale "be a good little boy" yet at the same time it speaks as a social commentary running through our modern celebrity driven, narcissistic me-first culture.
Imaginative, fun, amazing and strong are just a start to the adjectives that describe this masterwork.
