Review of Pineapple Express (2008) by Brian K — 13 Apr 2013
"It's like, if you took that Blue Oyster shit I gave you last week, and then that crazy African Kush I had that one time.. and they had a baby. And then meanwhile, that crazy Northern Light shit I had, and that Red shit I had, made a baby.
And by some crazy miracle, those two babies got together, and fucked... this would be it!" Never were more powerful lines uttered. That is a direct quote from 'Pineapple Express' spoken by James Franco in the best performance of his career.
If you didn't laugh at that offensive piece of dialogue, you may want to be tested. This movie, also starring Seth Rogen and Danny McBride, is possibly the funniest film I've seen so far in the year.
Rogen witnesses a murder and he and Franco are on the run from drug dealers and bad cops. With that premise we get some magnificently entertaining genre splicing. For instance: there is a car chase sequence which works on two levels.
It works on an action/suspense level, but it also works as pure ingenius comedy (Franco tries to kick the windshield out and intead, his foot goes through and gets stuck in the window. I always found myself laughing at the little things.
Franco's performance in particular is so laid back that any little thing he says can come across so hilarious. Danny McBride on the other hand gives a more over the top performance which nearly steals the show.
He plays their friend who betrays them several times. My favorite thing this film did, however, was take the token big black gangster man and made him a sensitive self loathing homosexual. The movie must be seen for full appreciation, but with the full load of guns, blood, marijuana, and asians, this movie is sure to have you rolling in the aisles: See it.
