Review of Pillow Talk (1959) by Ashley H — 19 Dec 2008
Even though the style screams "1960's" (especially the music), this film is surprisingly upfront (yet tame and tastefully so) about content that would soon become common topics of the sexual revolution which was just on the cusp of beginnning.
Indeed, this rom-com is all about life, liberty, and the pursuit of sex, but handles the material with such light-heartedness that it's almost hard to notice. Doris Day finds the perfect balance of baby-faced sweetness and stern confidence, while Thelma Ritter provides one of her career's most hilarious performances as a perpetually hung-over cleaning lady.
