Review of Pieta (2012) by Sarfaraz A — 10 Dec 2012
Pietà South Korean film written and directed by Kim Ki-duk. It won Golden Lion at 69th Venice International Film Festival. Film's title is referred to Pieta (Pity - an sculptor by Michaelangelo).
A ruthless young man in his 30s is hired by loan-sharks to get debt with interest from defaulters. But his method is to cripple those who fail to pay debts in time. One day he is approached by a mysterious aged woman claiming to be his mother, who abandoned him 30 years ago. At first he discards her, humiliates her, even has dry-sex with her, yet slowly depends upon her motherly affection.
I have always hinted that 21st century of film-industry here in Asia belongs to South Korea. So far they have blessed us with applauding movies. This movie bears excellent performance from lead actors, especially Jung. Very dramatic conclusion and heart-pounding scenes to watch.
