Review of Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman (2005) by Michael A — 31 Dec 2007
Yet again, that most unlikely of actors Timothy Spall turns in a brilliant, riveting performance in this biopic of Britain's most prominent hangman. As one might expect from the material, this is of necessity a downbeat film, with Pierrepoint seen going about his work in a frighteningly matter-of-fact fashion.
Indeed it's the very ordinariness of the execution scenes which make Adrian Shergold's film so thought-provoking and powerful. A fine supporting cast led by Juliet Stevenson and Eddie Marsan help to make this an effective, highly watchable film, despite its grim subject matter.
