Review of Pieces of April (2003) by Daniel H — 11 Jun 2007

I never cared much for Katie Holmes but I PVR'd "Pieces of April" and was really impressed. Not so much with Katie but more so with writer/director Peter Hedges and actress Patricia Clarkson.
It starts off as another recycled irreconcilable mother-daughter drama but the director handles it very well and is able to capture family and all its complications. "The psychological depth of this movie is astounding; and the characters, though there are many of them, are well realized." Peter Hedges is able to retain a similiar intelligence and understanding from his previous adapted screenplays: What's Eating Gilbert Grape and About a Boy.
