Review of Pieces of April (2003) by Sherry M — 08 Apr 2009
This is a delicious movie, more like a foreign film than hollywood, so wouldn't expect many hollywood lovers to get it , because you have to read between the lines, something hollywood doesn't get unless it is a great director like Beatty.
Aprils Mother has been cold hearted towards her, preferring her goody two shoes, shoe lickin daughter over April.
April refers to herself as the first pancake, and so April obviously is the black sheep, but has this incredible warmth about her, and as she goes from apartment to apartment to find an oven to cook her turkey in, she encounters many people who appreciate her openness, warmth and persona, and in this way provides for herself a family to come for thanksgiving.
Towards the end, April's Mother notices a woman treating her own young daughter in a way that most likely reminds her of how she treated April as a child, and comes to her senses.
She makes her way to Aprils apartment alone, and the family joins her and they all have a reunion. April not only gets her family back, but creates more family for herself. It is a heart warming movie, Katy is great in this film.
