Review of Pieces of April (2003) by Jennifer H — 21 May 2008
This movie was just ok for me.
I see how it's supposed realism and quirky characters may have enticed some of its viewers, however, I felt like the main character herself, or perhaps just the actress who played April didn't give the role enough personality, enough delightful quirkiness that one might expect from a character like April.
Patricia Clarkson however, delivered a great performance, showing us the anxiety, resignation and carefreeness of a dying mother with a dysfunctional relationship with her estranged daughter.
Overall, the movie had a nice theme to it...of reconnecting with others, accepting that we cannot do everything alone, and yes, some closure.
I just wish they had built up more on April's character. Or maybe Katie Holmes was just the wrong choice.
