Review of Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) by Oliver K — 09 Nov 2007
This film has just exploded onto my top movies list. I had been meaning to watch it for a while, and I had high expectations of it. But I didn't expect it to be so utterly compelling, bewildering, upsetting and awe-inspiring. Weir has perfectly re-created the most fascinating Australian unsolved mystery. Could not look away. Peter Weird is a great director, and I admire a lot of his works, but this has got to be by far his best film.
To watch this and not be seriously affected by it would mean that you simply did not get to watch it in the right environment. I really feel sorry for people who were force-fed it at school. You have my sympathy.
