Review of Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) by Mark S — 23 Nov 2007

Bizarre. Confusing. Irritating. Intriguing. I had heard a lot about this before I sat down to watch it, and in truth after viewing it I do think the film has become overrated. There's definitely something mysterious about it that keeps you watching, but the film is so perplexing that by the end you still don't really have a clue what it was all about.

Director Peter Weir has said "I did everything in my power to hypnotise the audience away from the possibility of solutions", and in that respect he achieved his goal. I would probably have to watch it again to have more of an understanding of the film's conclusion (if indeed there was one), but the problem is I wouldn't particularly want to watch it again.
