Review of Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) by M. K — 11 Jun 2011
The best film from the overrated Peter Weir falls well short of its frequently lobbed status as a masterpiece. Certainly it looks gorgeous, all soft light passing through frilly white lace costumes and drifting dust, but Weir somehow makes a story so intriguing oddly arch, with stiff acting, atrocious ADR, flat characterization, dubious symbolism (the swan), and as the story drifts further away from the central mystery, so too does the film's crucial focus.
