Review of Pickpocket (1959) by Ricardo O — 09 Jul 2010
Great film loosely inspired by Dostoyevsky's "Crime and Punishment". The pickpocketing scenes are done exquisitely and the cinematography is great. The "acting" like all Bresson films are bland, but that's the point.
He uses them as models and not as actors. He would often do about 30-50 takes for one scene to make sure the actor, or model as he called them, were exhausted and only delivered their lines straightforward without acting.
Will definitely need to watch it another time for better appreciation. A better place to start in Bresson's filmography than say, L'Argent as I have personally experienced. Very much recommended.
10/10.
