Review of Pi (1998) by Numna S — 30 Dec 2009
Pi is a captivating thriller. While the general plot culminates in a generic way, the style in which the story unfolds is gut wrenching. Steve Gullette plays the part of Max extremely well. His face is always emotionless when talking to people and then his eyes are wide open when reading off numbers (showing the importance of his life).
The film has a sort of Contemplative quality that brings up questions of being and existence with numbers, but the main drive is how paranoid Max becomes. One chase scene breaks out over nothing but a delusion.
The mental breakdown parts are also brilliantly directed, showing that Aronofsky has commendable talent as a director. When the film finally closes, you're still left wondering what could be. While this may be a detriment, I see it as the perfect way to close out the subject matter (Pi).
