Review of Pi (1998) by Luke B — 05 Jan 2011
This is Aronfsky finding himself. This is a physcological thriller that blends hints of Eraserhead and thoughts of Nolan's debut (B& W + phys. thriller + unique storytelling = first film) with his own direction (which can later be seen in his sophomore movie - Requiem For a Dream).
I liked it at first but started noticing flaws along the way with the overacting and the lack of experience from the director (the delivery of the feeling you're supposed to get isn't anywhere close to Requiem or The Wrestler or Black Swan). The climax and action scenes weren't up to expectations.
It was interesting, but it wasn't all that great.
