Review of Pi (1998) by Luca B — 20 Jan 2011
Starting his filmmaking career as he means to go on, Darren Aronofsky's debut feature, Pi, is a heady, challenging concoction of striking imagery and and expressive use of sound and camera angles. Made on a shoestring budget of $60,000 and shot on black and white, the film has the vernacular of a student film; similar to Christopher Nolan's independent short film Doodlebug (1997), Aronofsky clearly disregards creating a bog-standard and predictable film for the masses, instead opting for an anxious and startlingly watchable first film.
Although the storyline doesn's make any immediate sense, Pi is an interesting experience and a recommended opportunity to see this daring, accomplished auteur doing what he does best.
