Argh. So difficult to watch. The cyberpunky/noirish feel, the performances, and the camerawork were all interesting to see, this being Aronofsky's debut feature. However, this wasn't the right debut feature in the same sense I think Rashomon shouldn't be thought of as Kurosawa's big breakthrough.

Both have great use of camera in their respective styles, energetic performances, and obviously confident direction, but both have this misplaced sense of earnestness where I lose the energy to care about the characters/story the longer the films go on.

The more Max insists on or asserts what he believes in the less I wanted to see it through. Pi as a whole plays against its own strengths for being so much longer than it needs to be. I remember thinking once or twice while watching that I would probably have liked this more as a short.
