Review of Pi (1998) by Liz B — 16 Jan 2012
Who says movies about mathematics can't be intense? This used to be my favorite Darren Aronofsky movie until he came along and made The Wrestler. It's about this mathematician who is in search of a pattern in the stock market, a pattern that may be the key to unlocking something much bigger, and everybody from Wall Street traders to Hasidic Jews want the key.
I really like the way this movie is made, the black and white photography and the intensity of it all, but the main reason why I love Pi is that Darren Aronofsky, through a combination of a twitchy, amazing score and skillful editing, successfully puts you, the audience, on the same level with a person who is on the edge of insanity.
It is one jittery ride and a fantastic directorial debut.
