Review of Pi (1998) by Nash A — 02 Jun 2012
"Pi" is an extremely low budget independant movie that qualifies as a psycological thriller. It has a very interesting presmise and begs to be a David Lynch movie. Although it is never boring, it really didn't need to be a 90 minute movie.
The premise is that "everything can be understood in terms of numbers." The way they prove this sounds a lot like an off-the-wall conspiracy, however this is actually, for the most part, entirely true.
This is why I feel that this movie would have worked way better as a documentary. The movie had strange and pointless characters and a weird plot having to do with the main character's mental illess.
These things added nothing to the intruiging premise and thus were completely uneeded. Had "Pi" been a documentary, it would probably be an easy 5 out 5 stars for me. At the end of the movie I was questioning reality, just the like the movie was trying to accomplish.
However, there was too much filler and pointlessness in "Pi" for it to be a great movie. I would probably reccommend this movie to fans of "Lynchian thrillers" or mathmeticians.
