Review of Philadelphia (1993) by Gena D — 15 Jul 2010
I finally got to see this after having it on my 'to see' list forever. I liked this movie a lot. It is very deserving of the awards it received in 1993. It tells a very current and important story at a time when the issues dealt with in the film are very current.
Even today 17 years later some of the same fear and misunderstanding is still present regarding in particular AIDS and how it is contracted and regarding homosexuality. I think the film presents the story in an interesting and engaging way without being at all preachy.
The courtroom scenes were done very well and very realistically. There was a lot of ways they could have messed up the last 15-20 minutes but they didn't I think it ended perfectly. Hanks and Washington were on top of their games, the movie was emotional, engaging, well paced and highly entertaining.
