Review of Phil Spector (2013) by Frances H — 29 Mar 2013
What does a film like this say about our legal system when with top lawyers and special "rehearsals" of everything that can be thrown at witnesses in court, "celebrities" can still be found guilty? Maybe that our legal system isn't so bad.
But what about those accused who only have court appointed lawyers and can not afford to be extensively rehearsed? Or pay for their own expert witnesses? And then there are those who are pre-tried in the media circus.
Is there such a thing as justice? At least seeing this film brings up a few of those question. It is biased in favor of Spector, but it claims before the film even starts to be fiction, not a "true story.
" It does have some interesting scenes and Helen Mirren's performance is as good as always, even if Al Pacino goes WAY over the top. But any film that asks questions about the legal system and makes us think can't be all bad.
