Review of The Childhood of a Leader (2016) by Frances H — 03 Aug 2018
I decided to see this based on really loving The Words by Jean Paul Sartre and very much liking the acting of Liam Cunningham, plus some good reviews--but it was a waste of time and money! I could see they might have been going for comparing the punitive measures in the Treaty of Versailles to the punishing phrasing the boy gets from his father and that these punishing elements just make the future worse, but this is nothing like the Sartre story! There are some elements of Hitler's childhood here, but not many--just an older father and younger mother, plus the strict authoritarianism of the father, who doesn't get along with his son, but this kid certainly was petulant and the mother just didn't want to be bothered! Not at all my cup of tea!
