Review of Phenomena (1985) by Jimmy P — 11 Mar 2008
A solid, if not altogether remarkable, Argento opus, buoyed almost wholly by its deliciously tense, violent, and over-the-top bookend scenes. Too weird, pensive, surreal, and confusing for its own good, this is '80s Argento at his most flamboyant and detached.
Jennifer Connelly provides an excellent sympathetic core to the strange proceedings, and Daria Nicolodi makes yet another fiery appearance. Donald Pleasence, however, is tragically underused.
Horror connoisseurs will notice that the finale of this film -- flaming water and all -- was lifted by Friday the 13th Part VI.
