Review of Phenomena (1985) by Sonny P — 25 Aug 2008
This is one of Dario Argento's most unique works, combining his classic taste for giallo mystery-horror with a supernatural twist, all of which is accompanied by a lush and atmospheric soundtrack. My only criticisms come from Jennifer Connelly's occasionally stiff performance, as well as the fact that a few scenes are inexplicably set to the sounds of heavy metal music, which seems to come out of nowhere and doesn't really flow with the atmosphere of the rest of the film.
That being said, there's a great ending and a few truly classic scenes which raise this film far above your average supernatural slash-fest. After all, anyone who can direct a chimpanzee like this deserves some credit.
Not Argento's best but still highly recommended to the avid horror fan.
